Digital Learning Specialist (MED)

The Digital Learning Specialist (DLS) program at Plymouth State University prepares candidates to serve as instructional leaders in K–12 schools through the purposeful, ethical, and innovative use of technology. Designed around the New Hampshire Department of Education (NHDOE) competencies and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards, the program emphasizes instructional design, professional learning, equity of access, and the safe use of digital tools.

Students may pursue the program in two ways:

  • MEd + Certification (30 credits): For those seeking initial teacher certification, this option combines graduate-level coursework with supervised field experiences in K–12 school settings leading to New Hampshire Digital Learning Specialist certification. Prior teaching licensure is not required.
  • Certification-Only (21 credits): For already-licensed K–12 educators, this streamlined route provides the coursework required to add the Digital Learning Specialist endorsement, including supervised field experiences in K–12 schools.

Every course includes hands-on work with emerging technologies, including dedicated modules on artificial intelligence (AI), giving candidates practical experience in designing instruction, assessments, and professional development that responsibly leverage new tools. Graduates are prepared to integrate technology into curriculum and classrooms, and to serve as instructional coaches, leaders, and advocates for effective digital learning across their schools and districts.

A dual-certification option is also available, allowing candidates to earn both the Digital Learning Specialist K–12 Certification and the Library Media Specialist K–12 Certification through an overlapping set of courses.

Certification requirements may change in response to updates from the NHDOE. Eligibility for certification may also depend on meeting additional requirements such as passing professional examinations, completing a background check, and fulfilling any other criteria in place at the time of application. Candidates can find the latest NHDOE standards at education.nh.gov.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis for coursework beginning in the fall, spring, or summer semesters. More information can be found at plymouth.edu/admissions/graduate/application-deadlines.
