Allied Health Science (AHS)

Provides an overview of healthcare systems, trends, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal responsibilities, the role of healthcare providers in patient care. Develops important personal attributes such as communication, professionalism, cultural awareness, problem solving, decision making, and accepting personal responsibility. Students gain an overview of career options within allied health professions and the importance of a healthcare team approach. Allied Health Sciences majors only.

This course is designed to introduce students to the language of medicine and basic skills utilized by healthcare professionals. Springs and Falls.

Students will identify and complete a pre-professional observation experience with a provider(s) in their chosen professional career path(s) as an introduction to professional clinical settings. Students will complete Patient Confidentiality and site specific training and requirements as part of this experience. Students are responsible for finding their own observation opportunities for this course. Repeatable for credit for a maximum of two times. Fall and Spring.

Pre-professional allied health science students interested in pursuing a career in athletic training engage in observational and experiential learning in an athletic training professional practice setting. Students complete active learning hours under the supervision of a licensed athletic trainer. Falls and Springs.

Prerequisite(s): HE 2310 or AHS 2000, First Aid and CPR/AED (equivalent to BLS for Healthcare Provider) certification. Course is repeatable for a maximum of two times.

Basic concepts, principles, and methods of epidemiology investigation, the use and interpretation of data, and the understanding, recognition, and determination of strength of various forms of evidence. Topics include behavior of disease, rates, ratios, associations between risk factors and disease outcomes, clinically relevant questions and causal inferences, legal and ethical issues around health screening and genetic testing. Topics not covered in other Allied Health Science courses are presented allowing students to extend their experience and competencies in a variety of allied health-related topics. May be repeated for credit with different topics.

This course is designed to provide medical device sales students with an overview of anatomical terms, medical terminology, and the anatomy and pathophysiology of the upper and lower extremity and spine in preparation for a career in medical device sales. Springs.
